PROJECT OVERVIEW
eDART, a South African manufacturer of slurry equipment for metallurgical plants, partnered with GMS Systems to redesign its spray-painting process. Facing inefficiencies, heavy manual handling, and workflow bottlenecks, eDART needed a safer and more streamlined solution.
GMS Systems engineered a custom overhead monorail conveyor system capable of handling components up to 500 kg, enabling single-pass, 360-degree spray painting. The result was a safer, more efficient process that reduced handling, improved productivity, and supported eDART’s long-term operational goals.
THE CHALLENGE
eDART’s spray-painting process had become a constraint on productivity:
- Components varied in size and weight, with some reaching 500 kg
- Full paint coverage required multiple handling stages
- Labour-intensive process introduced safety and efficiency risks
- Workflow inefficiencies limited throughput and scalability
While functional, the system no longer aligned with eDART’s expectations for a modern, efficient operation.
THE SOLUTION
GMS Systems proposed a custom overhead monorail conveyor system, designed to transform the spray-painting workflow.

Key Elements:
- Components able to move without floor obstruction
- Integration with a container-based spray booth and external drying area
- Single-session, 360-degree access to components
- Newly engineered four-wheel trolley system to safely handle heavier-than-standard loads
IMPLEMENTATION AND COLLABORATION
Collaboration and continuous feedback were key to transforming a challenge into a robust solution.
The project required close collaboration at every stage:
- Continuous design refinement based on testing and client feedback
- Coordination between design, manufacturing, and project management teams
- Site preparation and structural reinforcement to support the overhead system
- Clear communication to adapt to installation constraints without delaying progress
The result was a smooth installation and a solution perfectly aligned with eDART’s operational environment.
RESULTS
The completed system delivered measurable operational improvements:
- 100% single-pass spray painting, eliminating multiple handling stages
- Significant reduction in manual handling, improving operator safety
- Improved workflow efficiency and reduced bottlenecks
- Increased productivity and throughput
- A scalable solution aligned with eDART’s long-term growth strategy
What began as a challenging requirement became a robust, practical system with lasting impact.

CONCLUSION
This project demonstrates the value of thoughtful engineering and strong client partnership. eDART brought a clear vision for improvement, and GMS Systems delivered a tailored solution through technical expertise, persistence, and collaborative problem-solving.
The result is more than an overhead conveyor, it is a purpose-built system that enhances efficiency, safety, and operational performance.
